In the "Split Phase and Neutral' slide [there are no slide numbers] European houses are not fed 240-0-240 in the way shown. Houses in USA are fed 120-0-120. Europeans are single 240 VAC. That's why there aren't transformers on poles for every three houses all over the place like there is in the USA. A much larger transformer is located locally and ground mounted (they are too massive to put on wooden poles). The phases are balanced at that point by assigning an equal load of houses so that one side of the transformer is not loaded more than the other. It also provides the ability for commercial users to pick up 3 phase at 415 VAC with little difficulty. The systems are quite different.

I guess this PhD (Piled higher and Deeper) lady knows more than all the PE's and Civil Engineers of the world, right? 🤷‍♂️ You are very dangerous, Kristen. Either you don't understand real engineering, or you did a very poor job trying to make your case. Most of what you are saying is going over my head, and I'm sure it went over most of those in the audience.

Kind of a misleading title. ARRL has published a Grounding and Bonding book and yet you dont even reference it. The NEC requires you bond your antennas (and therefore station ground) to your home's grounding electrode system and ultimately the utility grounded conductor. I think all this presentation will do is discourage hams from following these basic electrical safety requirements so they can operate safely.

Some applications are 16 bit based and not 32 bit based... some of the applications are also dos based. Win 95, 98, 2000 and some xp systems will accommodate those applications.

They give you a certificate for this he says. Dont be fooled. The license requires a competency test. This is not CB which is an unlicensed method of radio communication. The FCC requires testing for competency before an Amateur Radio license is issued. 10 year olds can pass the test and so can you. Its a hobby, a fraternity, and an adjunct emergency service of volunteers. We buy our own radios and antennas, and can communicate via radio around the world and into space with the International Space Station. Look up ARRL and Amateur Radio. A new world is at your door.

Just recently took my Tech license test and decided to purchase this kit from the ARRL store. Everything needed was in the package except my labor and soldering gun. Now am waiting on a telescoping mast to get it up in the air in the back yard but while waiting I decided to deploy it from within my garage, out one of the windows to a 12 ft pole I set inside a fence post. maybe 5 ft off the ground at its lowest point. Hooked it up to my rig and checked the swr, 1.2 to 1. Once my call sign was issued I then started to get on the air on 10 meters but the conditions aren't to favorable in my area so no luck on voice contact. Yesterday I had time to set up for FT8 and once all the settings were dialed in I got my 1st QSO out of the country of Panama within 20 minutes. not bad for a multi band end fed just haphazardly deployed running out the window!

I found a trick to understanding the video. I slowed the playback speed down to .75 (slower) using the gear icon in the lower right of the video. Also, I kept my finger on the pause icon in the lower left corner. Or you can just click on the video as it is playing to start/stop it. And I played the video at full screen size. That helps to be able to read the forms when you pause them and get out your magnifying glass. Doing all of this in one tab on my Firefox browser and filling out the forms on another tab made this only a two hour job.

Howdy! Are there any writeups on being a GOTA Coach? I have dedicated myself to promoting Ham Radio in the Silicon Valley, and trying to build the support structure for new hams that I, as a new ham, failed to find. Sadly, it turns out if you are naive enough to raise your hand at the wrong time, you end up on the board of several clubs. Trying to get all the clubs to support the SPECS MeetUp to promote radio with other groups, I ended up as a "co-captain" of a GOTA station at my first field day. Then the captain bowed out. I have been hosting events on the MeetUp, and at the Electronics Flea Market (used by many clubs as their fundraising source) to promote ham radio, and I plan to use the GOTA to entice people to get their licenses. I don't really care about "points". I have asked our Section leader to put me in touch with an ARRL ACC to find out what that entails as I may consider that role since I may be doing it already. What resources does ARRL have to help people like me get going? I am working on PowerPoint decks, and Word docs for new hams, but seems this is something that should already exist. Feels like I am all alone out here.....
